So..finally! Here is my rant on the Little Mermaid Broadway show
FIRST OFF: it should be noted that I'm an avid TLM fan and a perfectionist who gets upset at little details.
SECONDLY: the bottom line of my opinion is that the show is great and should definitly be seen if you have the chance. Overall, it's a great performance with lots of great points.
ACT I
was good...lots of room for improvement, but still good. The special effects throught the show are incredibly well done (land to water scene changes- amazingly beautiful! lightnign/trident powers, lagoon scene, Ursula's powers..all great). One of my biggest concerns for the show are the lack of sets (really, Under The Sea was...bad. I spaced off at one point and totally forgot I was at a show! And not only a show, a broadway show, and the Little Mermaid to be even more percise!! How scary) aswell as slacking in choreography- the mersisters do well shaking their beautiful tails (all have their own fin style/shell/hair design) but I feel they deserve a more chorus line/showgirl type dancing than just hand movements and tail wiggles. They're mermaids, they're beautiful and singing! Make 'em dance just the same!...They're really sweet on stage though so it all works out^^ Under The Sea has NO set except for two large, very akward candlabra-looking things that carry actors dressed as fish (and beautiful birds for Kiss The Girl) but look really bad during this scene as there is no other prop on stage. The cstumes, in my opinion, are a disaster. They're on the right track but they don't show any specific sea creature but are an abstract work of their own. Showgirls/boys in bright colors and wierd shapes, really. Add some coral head pieces, rippons with fish and more coral growing out of the bodies and you'll be on the sea floor, not inside a kalidescope.
Ariel and Flounder's relationship is sooo sweet, and poor little flounder lives up to his guppyness very cutely (he screams and zooms off stage when the seagulls pop up from behind the rocks XD). Sierra Bogess...is Ariel. She's amazing. THOUGH..the tails. I feel that if the skirts were a light blue to match the waves and the tails were different, darker colors you'd get more sense of the mermaid aspect. (I think I'll have to draw out my own designs of how the costumes should be altered...?)
Um..Ursula is amazing. Seriously; it's really really wierd and kinda sad but I think I like the Broadway Ursula more than the original :'x I really love how they once again made Ursula Ariel's aunt/Triton's sister, really adds to the story. Floatsam and Jetsam are really awsome characters in the show and do a great job with their way cool songs. Hm..I think the main thing that's needed to make this show really take if are sets/props. I felt like i was watching rehersal or something. Backdrops could help, though they did have lights that reflected rising bubbles during underwater scenes that werecool.
Ariel's transformation is kinda akward/silly as she wiggles out of a tial in the air...the rescue of Eric after the storm is amazing, as is the storm itself. Eric really looks like he's sinking through the ocean! And the brief moment he shares with Ariel underwater is really sweet (yes, concious!). Scuttle is joined by 10 other, tap dancing, seagulls for 2 fun numbers.
ACT II
was waaay better. I mean, act I was really good, but for some reason I really loved act II, strange I know. By the way, pick up the soundtrack ASAP 'cause it's great and will help you follow the story better. Ariel, through out the performance, is....a teenage girl. Like..13, instead of 16, but done in a silly/cute way. I think if she were a little more mature acting (actually, both her and Eric, unless they get younger actors) it may be a little more sincere. Still cute though, though I find Eric to be somewhat of a dork HAHA. Not really, he's just not ready to be king. Uuuum....the maids and wom I assume is Carlotta are really cool, I wish they had longer parts! The show almost feels short, but not really. It could be longer though. Kiss The Girl is one of my favorite scens although it's only as long as the song, so it's somewhat short (sttrange as it has the most elaborate "set"). Chef Louis is funny, and the dinner scene is well done and really funny. If Only is the most amazing song, they blend Ariel, Triton, Sebastian, and Eric's parts together so well..it's really touching and sweet. One thing I really love about the show is the new bond between Ariel and Triton; I think my all-time favorite moment of the movie is when Triton comes up out of the water to hug Ariel goodbye at the wedding so this father/daughter thing was really well done. Another cool point they got across was the female voice and how it's just as strong as any, everyone deserves their own chance to speak. The alternate ending WHICH I WON'T SAY(unless you ask
Actually, I found some bootleg clips of the denver preview that shows the mersisters, some scenes and Ursula's aawsome bubble! check it out:

Vid3: [link]
And although it doesn't look it in any of the clips, her hair needs to be like 3 shades darker >.< I also kinda like the fatter tails in these clips than the new ones..they need an inbetween.AND OHMAHGAWD they need to change the colors of her dress for kiss the girl! You don't give a redhead a top with a totally different shade of red!! It's blue! It looks ugly in the show! But only for 5 minutes...
If you have any questions about the show feel free to ask and I'll post! Buy beware, don't read what I reply to others if you don't want to know the details...
Devious Comments
I disagree with you on some things, but I guess seeing it live is just completely different!
Like in Under the Sea. The first time I saw the video on youtube I was like "oh wow they really made it simple, but it must work so well when you're seeing it there!!", but guess it doesn't
Now here come ze questions!!!!
1. Does Ursula get huge??
2. How is Ariel's transformation back to human form?
3. Does The World Above really work? I like the song but I always imagine that I wouldn't really like it on stage... Kinda sounds too simple.
4. How did they replace Vanessa?
5. How do Flotsam and Jetsam block the kiss?
Aaaaaaand I guess that's it xD Please don't spoil it too much for me! lol
I won't ask about the ending, I wanna keep the suspence XD
If this ever comes to the UK i'm so totally seeing it.
I haz a question!!!
How does it end??
Because Eric is so hell bent on finding the mystery voice and Grimsby promised his dying father to marry Eric by his soon approaching 21st birthday, Grimsby decideds to hold a contest for all the princesses in the land to sing and the best voice wins Eric's hand. Ariel is desperate to win him over so she jumps in and does a dance instead; before Eric can choose the sunsets and Ursula comes on stage(with her throne w/ giant tentes..so she's still somewhat menacing) and floods the castle, taking Ariel prisoner. Instead of Eric saving her, after Triton trades his soul for Ariel's freedom she steals Ursula's magic shell and smashes it, destroying Ursula. Triton and Arielappologize to each other and have a really sweet bonding moment as Triton turns her human and carries her up to the surface. Eric asks for her hand and Triton says she has her own voice and yadda yadda they marry and the mermaids and sailors dance together, land and sea

1. Kind of...she has big tentacles that wave around...
2. Her transformation is simple but sweet, it worked well
3. The world above does work, there's dialogue before so it's not as short. I think it's before she sees scuttle so it ties into that song.(I wish the actually song was longer though, it's really nice!)
4. They totally cut Vanessa out, but...that's all I can say. Don't listen to the last couple songs on the soundtrack they'll give away the ending.
5. Flotsam and Jetsam are electric eels and shock the boat
Hopefully I didn't give too much away, but tell me if I wasn't specific enough.

I was listening to the cast album (I'm poor so downloaded it) and it is amazing! At my first listen, I didn't like it, but I listened to it a second time and found it really good. You kind of have to forget that the movie ever came out.... In my opinion.....
And Ursula. I either love her, or hate her. I'm a tad undecided... I love how she is this menacing diva who gets off scheming. I love all her songs!
And I love the song "She's in Love"! And I saw one of the clips of "Daughter's of Triton", and I kind of wish that they used the zany hair-doo's that the sisters had in the movies...
It's really really wierd and kind of really sad, but I think I'm liking the broadway Ursula more than the original
All the scnes with Ursula were a huge hit with the audience, she got the most claps (except for the cast bow, when Sierra came out everyone stood up and it was all noisemakers and happy new years haha)

Anyways, while I'm thinking of it, Don't you think that Broadway Ariel is kinda a cross between movie Ariel and Giselle?? (enchanted) I was watching some bits on You tube and thats what I instantly though of, especially when Ariel is in that shorter pink dress.....
Yep, done
I might come up with new questions, so keep an eye out for them xD
